Couple Who Loved Children Laid to Rest

Today, family and friends buried Byrd and Melanie Billings, a couple well-known for their love and care of special needs children. They adopted at least 13.

The father and mother were killed July 9 in their home in Pensacola, Fla., where police have arrested as many as eight people suspected to have been involved in the fatal military-style home invasion. Officials said they were after the contents of the couple's safe.

While the tragic story of the death of the Billings has played out on national television, the fact that the tragedy took place in Pensacola is like losing a family member. It struck so close to home.

Pensacola is just down the road ... so to speak. It's a day trip just past Mobile. You know, a skip and a hop east along Interstate 10. It's like taking a trip to see Grandma.

Though the city is located in another state, the frequency of traveling to and doing business there is like an expansion of our own city limits in South Mississippi. Who here really thinks much about traveling back and forth to Pascagoula, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Gulfport, Biloxi, Mobile, Pensacola, which is located on the Florida Panhandle just east of Alabama.

Many of us in coastal Mississippi either have family in Pensacola, or we know someone from there. For about two years, a friend and I made business trips there once a month. She and her late husband previously had done so for a number of years.

Now Pensacola, home of the Blue Angels, the Navy's flight demonstration team, is in the national spotlight, but not for anyone of its many features. The city lays claim to being the first European settlement.

The fact that such a national tragedy happened so close feels as if the alleged robbers took the life of our next door neighbors. South Mississippi, too, is grieving the lost of family close to home.

GriefShare Lets Hurting Grieve Together

PASCAGOULA -- Sandra Sumrall said there are always men present at the weekly meetings of GriefShare, a support group for people who have experienced the death of a loved one.

They are young and old, from teenagers to senior citizens. Some are single, some married, a
nd some single again after the loss of their spouses.

Sumrall, coordinator of GriefShare, notes the number of males because they are not the people society normally prescribes as needing consolation. Men are not expected to cry, she said.

"We always have men," said Sumrall. "There's always been young men in the class. There's always been old men in the class. They hurt as badly as we do. It's not always acceptable for them to cry, and so they keep coming."

She said average attendance is about 10, but ranges from six to 20 participants at any one time. Participation, usually about two-thirds women, grows as the class progresses.

GriefShare participants come from all walks of life. They've lost spouses, siblings, children, parents, grandparents, and others.

"The meetings are for everyone who has lost a loved one," said Sumrall.

Family members have died from a variety of reasons - vehicle wrecks, diseases, suicides, etc.

GriefShare, which takes place at First Methodist Church in Pascagoula, usually runs no more than two hours during weekly sessions. The spring class runs from January to May, the spring sessions from August to November.

Sumrall said the meetings allow residents to work through the grieving process.

"What many people find helpful is talking with other people. Many people don't understand people who are grieving," said Sumrall. "They think they ought to get over it and get on with life."

GriefShare members share their grieving processes with each other, including celebrations and memorials that mark the life and loss of family and friends. Some members have special ways to observe birthdays, or conduct activities that help them remember loved ones no longer living.

"What works for one person doesn't work for another," said Sumrall.

The most recent group of GriefShare participants have formed a very tight group, she said, and are still meeting through this summer, though official meetings restart in early August.

"They are by no means over the grieving," Sumrall said. "They saw the benefit of being together. They have come to depend on each other. They have cookouts over the summer."

GriefShare meets each Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Residents needing the companionship and help of GriefShare may contact First Methodist Church in Pascagoula at 762-5222, or e-mail Sandra Sumrall at masonsumrall@cableone.net

Safe Kids Week: Tips for Internet Safety

JACKSON, Miss. -- During national "Safe Kids Week 2009," April 26 to May 3, Attorney General Jim Hood offered parents some simple tips to help keep their children safe while surfing the Internet.

"We're living in a day and time when children know more than their parents about the Internet," said Hood. "Parents need to educate themselves, at least enough to check their computer's history. Even easier, purchase monitoring software to do the job for you.

"Above all, communication is key," Hood said. "Talk to your children about what is acceptable Internet usage and what is not.  Remember, it is your computer, not theirs."

The attorney general reminds parents that while the Internet is a great tool that can open a child's world to a whole new realm of knowledge, it also opens the doors to a whole new set of dangers.

"You have to consider that a computer has the potential to break down every physical barrier between a predator and your child," Hood said. "Who is going to protect them if you don't?"

Some simple Internet tips can keep your child safe online:
  • Keep your computer in a family room or den, not in your child's bedroom.
  • Have your child participate in a rule setting for Internet usage.
  • Know your child's password or keep it to yourself and log them on whenever they need to use the computer.
  • Remember that your child has Internet access away from home and remind him/her that the rules apply at every computer, at home or elsewhere.
  • Investigate the variety of parental controls, filtering, or blocking software and spyware protectors available.
  • Teach your child to never give out personal information to people they meet online.
  • Talk to your children about what to do if they see something that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.
For more Internet safety tips, as well as other helpful tips concerning child safety visit www.agjimhood.com and download the full copy of "Guide to Child Safety: A Parents Plan."

No Wrongdoing in Billy Joe's Death

Media outlets covering the investigation of the Dec. 8 death of a star athlete at George County High today reported that a grand jury in Lucedale found no evidence of wrongdoing.

The findings, which were read in open court Feb. 13 by jury forewoman Regina Graham, said that Billey Joe Johnson Jr. of Benndale died of an accidental shooting at his own hands.

www.gulflive.com

She said that forensic evidence showed the 17-year-old's fingerprints on the barrel of the shotgun, which did not have its safety feature in place. However, testimony of family members, civic leaders and others ruled out the possibility that Johnson would have killed  himself.

www.wlox.com

The evidence, including police records and unnamed witnesses also showed that the officer --  Sheriff's deputy Joe Sullivan -- who had pulled over Johnson for running a stop sign and redlight was at his patrol vehicle checking for information about the star running back at the time he heard the gunshot that took Billey's life.

The evidence also showed that Billey Joe Johnson Jr. was not attempting to break into the home of his former girlfriend, Hannah, but was merely attempting to say hello when he tapped on the window of her home before he died minutes later Dec. 8, 2008.

There were discrepancies in the timing of the events of that morning, according to the grand jury forewoman, who said that police headquarters and officers' clocks were not in sync. But apparently the differences in time were not enough to change significant consideration of the overall findings.

Billey Joe's family and many residents in George County were heartbroken and unbelieving of the jury's conclusion. His parents, Billey Joe Sr.  and Annette Johnson, have vowed to continue their legal pursuit for "justice" in the death of their son.  The father said someone killed his son.

"We are going further and we are going higher," the teenager's mother said.

The family's attorney, Jerome Carter of Mobile, Ala., and Curley Clark, president of the Jackson County NAACP, plan to continue an independent investigation, present evidence to the U.S. Justice Department and ask for a federal probe.

District Attorney Tony Lawrence assured the family of Billey Joe Johnson Jr. that the investigation into the death of the outstanding student-athlete would be thorough. He met with the family during the investigation and work to stop rumors that spread through the community about the case.

Lawrence said that it would be hard for some to accept the finding of an accidental death, but that is what the facts showed.

Billy Joe Case Goes to Grand Jury

UPDATE (2/12) -- The grand jury decision expected Wednesday will be made today.

During the early afternoon today South Mississippi residents are expected to learn what decision was made by a grand jury hearing evidence concerning the untimely death of teenager Billey Joe Johnson Jr.

The circumstances of the Dec. 8, 2008, death of the high school football standout has caused racial tension among Lucedale residents where the star athlete had once been a source of pride and community spirit for students at George County High and residents across that county and South Mississippi.

National media attention has focused on the case, and interest in the investigation has stirred community action groups both local and across the country.

Comments on South Mississippi and regional media outlets have ranged from deep sadness and hurt for and because of the family and their legal actions following Johnson's death, to downright hateful and mean name-calling from some spouting racists remarks about Johnson and the civil rights organization also investigating the circumstances of the Benndale teen's death.

Billey Joe, 17, died of a gun shot to the head after being stopped by a Lucedale police officer. He said Johnson was pulled over after failing to stop for a red light and a stop sign. The officer has said he was in the process of making a call to the police station when he heard the gun go off.

Lucedale Police Chief Garry Welford has surmised that Johnson possibly died of a self-inflicted wound, though the chief has also speculated that the gunshot could have been an accident.

Johnson's family members have said they do not believe their relative killed himself.  His parents, Billey Joe Sr. and mother Annette, have said he had too much to live for, and was preparing to attend Auburn University.

The parents sought attorney Jerome Carter of Alabama and the NAACP, asking local chapter Pesident Willie Gaines and Jackson County-Moss Point Chapter President Curley Clark to investigate.  An independent autopsy has concluded Billey Joe Johnson Jr. did not kill himself.

Clark has said the death was either an accident or a homicide.

Regional District Attorney Tony Lawrence has held news conferences and meetings with the media and Johnson's family to squash wildfire rumors about the death, and to assure Johnson's family and the public that the case was being thoroughly investigated.

Days after Johnson's death the case became cloudy and more circumspect after the public learned Johnson was in legal trouble at the time he died on Mississippi 26.  Just prior to the traffic pullover, Billey Joe had been identified as the suspect in a reported burglary attempt at the home of his former girlfriend, according to information gained from the public.

The female student, who attends George County High, and her mother were reportedly on their way to file charges against the Johnson during the early morning hours, sometime before 6 a.m.

Family, friends, local and national groups gathered at the George County Courthouse on Feb. 10 as a grand jury hearing convened on the case. Their decision is expected about 1:30 p.m. today.

Dauphin bridge drowning anniversary

Earlier this month family and residents in Alabama marked the one-year anniversary of the drowning of four children allegedly tossed from an 80-foot high bridge, a tragedy that caused heartbreak across the Gulf Coast region.

The deaths occurred Jan. 7, 2008, over Mobile Bay where law officials say the children were thrown from the Dauphin Island Bridge. They ranged in age from 4 months to 3 years.

Mobile County Sheriff's Department accused Lam Luong of throwing his children from the bridge after arguing with the children's mother, Kieu Phan. His capital murder trial begins March 9 in Mobile.

The bodies of 3-year-old Ryan Phan, 2-year-old Hannah Luong, 1-year-old Lindsey Luong and 4-month-old Danny Luong were found within a two-week period in three states as government agencies and residents across southern Alabama, Mississppi and Lousiana searched for the missing children.

Ryan and Danny were found in marshes of Alabama, Lindsey in Mississippi near Chevron Inc.,  and Hannah in the open ocean of Louisiana.

Law enforcement included Jackson County Sheriff's and Pascagoula Police departments and the Coast Guard, as well as fishermen, marine and wildlife personnel, and residents all along this southern coastal area.

Vigils and rememberances were held during the holidays and earlier this month for the children to mark the day of their passing, and to continue support for their mother and other family members.

Birthday party Anyway

The family of Shakeylia Marie Anderson plan to observe the upcoming birthday of the Gulfport teenager, who would have turned 18 years old on Jan. 30.

"We're having the party anyway," mother Sandra Anderson told reporter Robin Fitzgerald at www.sunherald.com.

Anderson, 17 at the time of her death in early December 2008, was a student at Harrison Central High School, where she participated in ROTC.

Harrison County prosecutors charged Leslie Galloway III, 25, of Moss Point with capital murder, underscored by rape and arson. A preliminary hearing Jan. 23 presented details of Anderson's death, including evidence linking Galloway to the murder. Judge Robin A. Metcalfe sent the case to a grand jury.

Law enforcement accused Galloway of raping Anderson, who was said to have been his girlfriend, burning her body and causing her death by running over the teenager several times with a vehicle. A Ford Taurus belonging to Galloway's mother was used, according to media reports.

SunHerald.com reported that Galloway claimed two other males committed the crimes against Anderson after forcing the couple to leave a park. Law enforcement believe Galloway is the culprit.

Hunters discovered Shakeylia Anderson's body Dec. 6 in a wooded area off Mississippi 15.

The nation has been grieving with the family of teenager Jett Travolta, son of movie stars John Travolta and Kelly Preston.

Jett, 16, died Jan. 02, 2009, after suffering a seizure at the vacation home of his parents located in The Bahamas.  The family held burial services this week after returning to Ocala, Fla.

National news reports said a caretaker discovered the young man in a bathtub, on which police officials initially surmised he had hit his head, but funeral officials later said that was not the case. Jett's father administered CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene.

John Travolta, who is a Scientologist, identified his son's body after the teenager was taken to a Bahamian hospital, where he was prononuced dead and an autopsy performed.  Travolta and Kelly Preston were reported to have spent several hours with the body of their son after the identification.
