Lauren Leigh Hill was among young adults who passed away during fall 2008.
Mourning the death of the 21-year-old Biloxi resident were parents Frank W. and Holly Graham, brother Graham Scott Brandon, and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Graham.
Lauren died Oct. 27 and was laid to rest Oct. 29 following a Mass of Chrisian Burial at Nativity B.V.M. Internment was at Southern Memorial Park.

Teen, 1-year-old die in separate accidents
A teenager and toddler died within a week of each other in South Alabama during mid-November.
The 17-year-old had been involved in a police chase and vehicle crash in west Mobile on Nov. 11. A 15-year-old was critically injured, and two teens injured in the wreck of the Mustang convertible.
Mobile police identified Richard Hamilton, 18, and Jacob Cartee, 19, as passengers in the vehicle but did not name the other juveniles.
Prichard police said a 1-year-old girl was struck by a Nissan Armada while crossing the parking lot at Anton Square Apartments on Anton Street in Prichard. She was headed to a nearby playground.
The 16-year-old driver of a SUV that struck the child transported her to University of South Alabama Medical Center, where she died of her injuries Nov. 8, 20008.

GULFPORT -- Family, friends and the South Mississippi community were shocked by the brutal death of 17-year-old Shakeylia Anderson on Dec. 5.Hunters discovered Anderson's nude body Dec. 6 in woods near Mississippi 15. Law officials said she had been repeatedly raped, run over by a vehicle several times, and her body set on fire. The officials suspected her former boyfriend, Leslie Galloway III of Moss Point.
Shakeylia was a senior at Harrison Central High, where she had been a member of the school's Reserve Office Training Corps (ROTC).
Billey Joe Johnson Jr.
April 25, 1991 -- Dec. 8, 2008Though numerous teen deaths saddened families and communities in South Mississippi during 2008, no other brought as much attention and controversy as that that followed the death of Billey Joe Johnson Jr.
A standout football player at George County High School, Johnson died during the early morning hours of Dec. 8 after he was stopped by a Lucedale police officer. It was that very police presence without any corroborating evidence of the death and the initial investigation of the scene that caused the teenager's family to question the circumstances of his sudden and shocking death.
They asked for an independent investigation by the NAACP, which has been led by President Curley Clark of the Moss Point - Jackson County Chapter, and state chapter vice president.
Media reports said the Benndale resident died from a shotgun blast to the head after he was pulled over on Mississippi 26 for running a stop sign and red light, according to Police Chief Garry Welford. The death made national headlines because of Johnson's outstanding athletic achievements.
According to www.sunherald.com, Johnson's parents -- Billey Joe Sr. and Annette -- were upset that they were notified of their son's death after his football coach Al Jones was called to the scene to identify the body. The family also was not allowed to view the 17-year-old's remains at the scene during the initial investigation that took place over several hours and well into the afternoon of Dec. 8.
To avoid a conflict of interest and the appearance of impropriety, Chief Welford called in the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the state Bureau of Investigation and the District Attornery's Office of Jackson and George Counties to investigate the death.
Welford initially said he could not tell if Johnson shot himself or if the shotgun went off accidentally, as reported by www.wlox.com and the Press-Register at www.gulflive.com. The officer at the scene said he was about to call in the traffic violations when he heard a shot and breaking glass and then saw Johnson on the ground next to the open door of his truck. The officer said the gun was lying atop Johnson's body.
Rumors abounded after the teenager's death before District Attorney Tony Lawrence called for calm and assured the public and Johnson's family that his untimely passing would be thoroughly investigated, as reported by regional media. Lawrence met personally with Johnson's family before a public funeral service and later private burial at Fairley Creek Cemetery in Blackcreek.
Days after the teenager's death, media reports said that Johnson had been identified as the suspect in an attempted break-in at the home of his former girlfriend. Reportedly, the student and her mother were on their way to Lucedale's police station to file charges against Johnson at the time his death was called into law enforcement.
Clark and attorney Jerome Carter of Mobile had an independent autopsy performed on the 17-year-old running back before an estimated 600 to 800 students and residents attended his funeral services Dec. 20 at George County Middle School gymnasium. Carter said the autopsy was inconclusive because part of Johnson's head and face were still with the state medical examiners office.
Neither Clark nor Carter believe Johnson committed suicide, and Clark has said the only other possibilities for the death are accidential shooting and homicide. They cited statements from family and friends that the student athlete had too much to live for to kill himself.
Johnson was well-liked and admired by his coaches, students, teachers and community leaders. He was known for his leadership, Christian life, and football skills.
During his junior year he completed 1,529 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Rebels team, and had gained about 4,000 yards total during his football years. He was being recruited by colleges including Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Louisiana State, and Oregon.

James Mack Allen, 17, died Christmas Day in Gulfport.
He was preceded in death by grandfather Mack Patterson, grandmother Liz Allen Moss, uncle Anthony C. Allen and mother Jennifer K. Allen.
Allen's father, Michael S. Allen of Biloxi, and brother Stanley Stewart of Dallas, Texas, are his surviving relatives.
Graveside services were held at Biloxi National Cemetery.

Accused killer of Hudson family appears in court
The man accused of killing three relatives of singer and actress Jennifer Hudson, including her 7-year-old nephew, was indicted Tuesday, Dec. 30, in a Chicago courtroom.

William Balfour is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Julian King, son of Hudson's sister Julia, her mother Darnell Donerson and brother Jason Hudson. He has pleaded not quilty. (Information may be found at the Associated Press)
Balfour is the estranged husband of Julia Hudson and the stepfather of Julian, whose body was found in a sports utility vehicle three days after his grandmother and uncle were discovered in Donerson's home Oct. 24.
The killings shocked the nation, and was one of the leading stories about children's death during 2008. A number of other deaths shocked America, including the story of 3-year-old Caylee Anthony, who had been missing since June and whose remains were identified Dec. 11, her birthday.
Dustin D. Simoneaux, Keahn L. Hill
Dustin Dewayne Simoneaux died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008. The 21-year-old, known as "Duddy," was a resident of Saucier.
A visitation was held Oct. 29 and a Celebration of Life service was conducted Oct. 30 in the chapel of Rieman Family Funeral Home on Three Rivers Road in Gulfport. Burial was at Saucier Cemetery.
Riemann also conducted funeral services for 2-year-old Keahn L. Hill, who died Oct. 21, 2008.

Tanae Laree Ladner
Tanae “Nae Nae” Laree Ladner, 13, of Pass Christian died Wednesday, March 19, 2008. She was born in Gulfport.
Tanae was a student at DeLisle Elementary School, and had been crowned Miss Mississippi for a day.
She is preceded in death by grandfather Cecil Ladner.
Survivors include parents Terry and Julie Cuevas Ladner of Pass Christian; sisters Jazell Ladner, Tareka Ladner, and Keyera Ladner, all of Pass Christian; grandmothers Patsy Ladner of Pass Christian and Judy Cuevas of Kiln; grandfather Bobby Cuevas of Kiln; great-grandmother Ofelia Niolet of Kiln; uncles Rodney and Robbie Ladner of Pass Christian and aunt Tabath Cuevas of Kiln.
Visitation was held March 21 with a rosary at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Long Beach. A prayer service was held at St. Ann's Catholic Church in the Dubuisson community, with visitation until services. Burial followed at Alphonse Malley Cemetery. A reception was at St. Ann's Hall.

Joshua Adam Baker, 23, of Gulfport died Thursday, March 6, 2008. He was a native of South Mississippi.
Survivors include parents Michael and Susan Baker of Ocean Springs; daughters Ava Michele Baker and Breanna Leigh Baker, both of Gulfport; girlfriend Christina Parker of Gulfport; sister Genifer McVicker of Ocean Springs, and brother Michael "Mikey" Baker II of Pace, Fla.
Joshua was found dead in his truck of a gunshot wound to the head, according to a March 08, 2008, news report at www.sunherald.com. Gulfport police said he was found on Ponderosa Drive, where his Dodge pickup hit an automobile that was apparently some distance from where his vehicle had drifted after the 23-year-old was shot.
"I didn't believe it. It was a horrible shock. We will all miss his big, happy smile," said Baker's sister, Genifer McVicker, to a reporter with the Sun Herald.

Family begins legal pursuit in death of VanAlstines

Relatives of Phillip and Shyla VanAlstine have begun a pursuit for legal and financial compensation in the deaths of their family members, according to media reports.
The family filed a suit in federal court this week charging Waste Management of 'willful, wanton negligence' for the July 29 vehicle wreck that killed the Vancleave couple and their 7-year-old daughter Haylie and injured 4-year-old Kaytie.

Daughter Avery, 18 months then, was in the care of family members at the time of the wreck, which occured on Interstate 12 in Baton Rouge, La.

Brian David Robisheaux, an 18-year-old from Gulfport, died Sept. 11, 2007.
He graduated in 2006 with honors from the Youth Challenge Program of Louisiana, and was employed by Cajun Cutters Lawn Care Service, owned and operated by his father, David Robisheaux.
Brian loved the outdoors, especially riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews -- Devondrick, Ashton, Ashlyn, Jada and Spencer.
Brian was preceded in death by maternal grandparents William “Bill” Williams and Bettie Barnes Williams, and uncle Rufus Hill.
Brian was the beloved son of David Peter Robisheaux and wife Donna, and Jean Williams Bagwell and husband Royce. He is also survived by sister Rachel Lewis and husband Damondrick; brother Bryce Robisheaux; stepbrother Brandon Cooper and wife Samantha.
Other family survivors include paternal grandparents Solly “Jack” and June Robisheaux; step-grandmother Sheryl Cooper; step-grandparents Donald Cooper and wife Charlotte; uncles Solly Robisheaux and wife Patricia, Jeri Williams, and Joe Tom Williams and wife Leah; aunts Beth Robisheaux Holley and husband Jerry “Randy”, Mary Robisheaux Hill, Lou Malbrough and husband Melvin, Bridgette Basas and husband Julio; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Catherine Rebecca Hale, 21, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Biloxi. She was born Nov. 28, 1986.
She was a 2008 graduate of Harrison County Child Development Center and attended Mill Creek.
Catherine was preceded in death by her grandfather, Willie O'Connor, and great-grandmother Rebecca Reed Bradley. She is survived by her mother, Ruth E. Hale; grandmother Felice O'Connor; brothers William (Marilyn) Hale of Gulfport, Anthony M. Hale Sr. of Biloxi, Bradley R. Hale of Gulfport and Lonnie J. Hale of Biloxi; nephews Anthony M. The Moss Point Tigers and the Pascagoula Panthers will go head to head for the traditional rivalry game Sept 12 at Dantzler Memorial Stadium in Moss Point. The game is one of the most anticipated in Jackson County every year.
This friendly competition sparked Moss Point to start a new tradition three years ago where the hosting team invites the other over to its neck of the woods for a special breakfast.

The school district superintendent, high school principal, head football coach, and mayor from Moss Point and Pascagoula are slated to attend.
This is not your typical breakfast. Participants from both sides usually engage in “big talk” to say why their team is going to win this year.
The rivalry between Moss Point and Pascagoula is included in a new book, Y’all vs Us, which features the top 15 high school football rivalries in Mississippi.
The books will be on sale for $35 at Moss Point’s home gate.

He is survived by parents Chad and Shannon Hotalen, brothers Hunter and Graham, and a host of other family members.
A memorial service was held Sept. 6 at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Robertson officiating. A private burial was held at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk, Va.

Schools reopen following Hurricane Gustav

Schools across South Mississippi opened Wednesday and Thursday following storm preparation and evacuation for Hurricane Gustav, which did not cause major damage in the three coastal counties.The 2008 summer season's seventh named tropical storm/hurricane made landfall as a Category 2 storm Sept. 1 about 70 miles west of New Orleans, which had evacuated about 1.9 million residents.
Communications Director Myya Robinson with the Moss Point School District on Aug. 30 announced precautionary measures to have schools remain closed Tuesday. Classes resumed Wednesday along with other districts in Jackson and Harrison counties.
All educational districts in Hancock County are set to reopen today.

Media outlets published the report a day before Gulf Coast residents marked the third anniversay of Katrina on today.
The report said that nearly half those who died in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama were over 75 years old. Most died the morning Katrina hit the Gulf Coast - Aug. 29, 2005. The eye came in near Waveland and Bay St. Louis, Miss., almost wiping the small towns from the shoreline.

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI -- Tropical Storm Gustav has killed about 22 people in Haiti since forming late Monday night.
On the eve of the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, South Mississippi residents are preparing well ahead of what could possibly turn into -- we all hope not -- a replay of Aug. 29, 2005.
Residents already are buying extra groceries and other hurricane supplies, including generators, batteries, etc. Hotel rooms well north of coastal counties have been reserved for the coming week, according to media reports.
Hurricane tracking agencies have Gustav on a beeline to New Orleans, the same predicted path of Katrina before she took an eastward turn toward Mississippi. Still, meterologists and hurricane officials have said it is too early to determine exactly where Gustav will go.
Gustav is the second tropical storm and expected hurricane directed at South Mississippi this 2008 summer season and within the past week. Possible landfall is projected for the Gulf Coast area extending from south Florida to Texas and Mexico.

Heavy rains fell late into Sunday night and early Monday morning. Fay also dumped torrential rains on Alabama and Louisiana for the remainder of Monday.
The storm had crossed the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba, killing several people. The rainmaker earned the moniker “Fickle Fay” as it hit the Florida Keys, zigzagged back and forth between land, the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Ocean to hit Georgia, as well as the peninsula state four separate times.
The rains were much needed in northern Florida, and Fay's remnant will provide water needed also in drought areas of north Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and other states.
As the storm headed toward South Mississippi, an emergency shelter was opened at the Gautier Convention Center as a precaution for residents seeking safety from flooding in low-lying areas across Jackson County.

Tiffany Talley's former boyfriend was sentenced Monday, Aug. 25, to 20 years in prison for her shooting death nearly two years ago. He was convicted of manslaughter in July.
Jonathan Barfield of Gulfport still maintained that the killing was accidental, though during his trial friends and co-workers of Talley quoted the 17-year-old girl as saying Barfield was abusive and had threatened to kill her
He reportedly apologized to Talley's family during the sentencing on Monday.

Talley, honor student and standout basketball player at Gulfport High, died Dec. 27, 2006, while visiting Barfield's trailer at a FEMA park to return some of his belongings.
Ursula Lawton, Tiffany's mother, and the teenager's siblings told a reporter with WLOX TV-13 that they are still hurt about the death, and think the sentence is not enough. The mother does not believe Barfield is remorseful about her daughter's death.

"Lil" Jerry Wilson Memorial
Jerry and Renee Wilson recently observed the birthday of their son, Jerry Jerrell "Lil Jerry" Wilson. They will mark the one-year anniversary of his death Sept. 18.

Jerry Jerrel Wilson, 19, died Sept. 18, 2007, in Mobile, Ala. He was born Aug. 10, 1988.
He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Renee Wilson of Pascagoula. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Wilson Jr. and Dessie B. Wilson.
An avid sportsman from age 4, “Lil” Jerry played t-ball, basketball and baseball, and was a member of the All-Star Baseball team for several years. He also was a representative of the State of Mississippi Baseball Championship games in 1998 and 2001.
An honor student, he received highest achievement awards in science, English, math computer discovery and other subjects. He was recognized for perfect attendance and was a Principal's List and Superintendent’s List student throughout his school years.
Wilson was a 2006 graduate of Pascagoula High with highest honors and received several scholarships. He was in his second year at University of South Alabama in Mobile, studying physical therapy.
Jerry and Renee always admonished "Lil" Jerry to put God first in his life and to remember 'if God be for you who could be against you?' Those who forever cherish his life, love and legacy:

A graveside celebration of life service was held June 25 at Serene Memorial Gardens Cemetery in the Escatawpa community. The Rev. Leonard Miller officiated.

Qualan Alexander Evans, 13, of Gulfport died June 14, 2008, in Nashville, Tenn. He was born Sept. 1, 1994, one of triplet brothers, to Lance Leon Evans Sr. and Patsy Ann Evans of Gulfport.
He had attended Lyman and Orange Grove elementary schools, and North Gulfport Seventh and Eighth Grade School. He was a member of Lyman Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Qualan was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arthur Junior Carr.

JACKSON -- Mississippi parents have a new resource now available to them addressing important prevention information on youth suicide, courtesy of Attorney General Jim Hood.
The Office of Attorney General, through its Crime Prevention & Victim Services Division, has compiled a brochure for parents called “Youth Suicide: What Parents Should Know.”
The resource provides statistics on youth suicide, outlines the signs a young person may be considering suicide, and lets parents know what they can do if they suspect their child is contemplating suicide.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24, the second leading cause of death for college students and the fourth leading cause of death for children ages 10 to 14. A 2007 national survey indicated that 15% of high school students in Mississippi reported that they had seriously considered attempting suicide.
“The facts about youth suicide are absolutely frightening,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “I was shocked that the statistics are so high and the resources are so low that I felt compelled to compile some information that I felt parents needed to know.
"This is one of those issues that we can’t resolve after the fact. Prevention and education are key. That’s why I am honored to join other attorneys general across the nation in supporting the work of organizations such as The Jason Foundation to provide programs for youth, those who work with youth, educators and parents to prevent youth suicide.”

She was driving herself and her younger brother, Brian Jameel, to school at Harrison Central High. Jameel,15, also suffered fatal injuries when the car flipped on the highway.
Their parents, Brian and Yvette Pearse of Gulfport, started a campaign promoting seat beat safety among students. In May 2007 and this spring, the Pearses awarded four $500 scholarships to Harrison County high school graduates attending college, university or trade school.
When appropriate, students may submit applications to K&J Foundation, P.O. Box 1686, Gulfport, MS 39502. The applications are available at local guidance counselors.

No report of her medical condition could be confirmed Friday morning with staff or public relations officials at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
Kaytie, 4 years old, was critically injured July 29 during a four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 12 in
Louisiana. Her parents and older sister, Phillip and Shayla VanAlstine, and her older sister Haylie were killed. The family members were laid to rest Aug. 4 among an outpouring of community support.

PASCAGOULA -- Haylie VanAlstine, 7, died July 29, 2008, during an automobile accident that also killed her parents, Phillip and Shyla VanAlstine, in Baton Rouge, La.
She would have begun second grade at Vancleave Lower Elementary School on Aug. 6, and was looking forward to the new year, according to reports from district teachers.
Haylie's younger sister, 4-year-old Kaytie, was in critical condition following the four-vehicle wreck on Interstate 12. She was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
Their youngest sister, 11-month-old Avery, was at home with relatives.

Fort of Baton Rouge rear-ended the VanAlstine's van. The fenders got caught, causing the van to spend before it was hit by a sanitation truck.
Fort was also injured and, initially, had been expected to be charged in the deaths once she had left the hospital. However, media outlets recently reported Lousiana law officials have said they have insufficient evidence to file charges. Those officials have said Fort, of Baton Rouge, was tailgating the VanAlstines' vehicle when the wreck took place July 29.
After a visitation attended by approximately 2,200 people Sunday, Aug. 3, in Pascagoula, and funeral services Aug. 4 at St. Paul United Methodist Church East Campus in Ocean Springs, Haylie and her parents were laid to rest at Biloxi National Cemetery.
Phillip VanAlstine was a 17-year member of the Army National Guard. He had recently served a year in Iraq.

PASCAGOULA – The line of students, district teachers and officials at the Vancleave Attendance Center stretched unceasingly it seemed outside the funeral home Aug. 3 where respects were paid to the Van Alstine family members killed July 29 in a vehicular wreck.
That line inside O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home on Telephone Road also curved around the chapel room and down the hall into the parlor for the closed-casket memorial.
On Aug. 6, General Manager William Wilmoth said approximately 2,200 people attended the service for 14-year English teacher Shyla VanAlstine, her husband Phillip, and their 7-year-old daughter Haylie.
Hal Holmes, superintendent at Vancleave Attendance Center, said the loss was hard.

The faces of family, friends, colleagues and residents of Vancleave and from across Jackson County were somber. Numerous ones wept openly, comforted by others also grieving the loss of the three Vancleave residents. Everyone waited patiently in the evening sun.
Inside they signed an extended banner that offered get-well wishes to 4-year-old Kaytie, who still is in critical condition at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La. Wilmoth said the banner stretched over 60 feet.
Wilmoth said about 800 people attended funeral services Aug. 4 at St. Paul United Methodist Church East Campus in Ocean Springs, located at U.S. 90 and Mississippi 57.
American Legion members and active members of the Army National Guard also attended in honor of Phillip VanAlstine's 17-year service in the military, including a year in Iraq.
Holmes must now replace a 14-year instructor who was head of the English Department at Vancleave Attendance Center. She also had been girls volley ball coach about 10 years.

Born Oct. 23, 1989, in Jackson, Miss., to John E. and Margaret Willingham Dobbs of Pascagoula, he had been a resident of Pascagoula since 1991.
John Robert would have graduated with honors May 23 with his class. He worked part-time for Burnham Drugs in Moss Point, and was a worship leader a Central Church of Christ. John Robert gave his life to Christ at age 9 while attending summer camp.
He loved being a camper at Gulf Coast Bible Camp and had attended for many years. He had
many wonderful friends and will be missed by all who knew him.
