Students Attend Services for 16-year-old Classmate Killed While Riding Bicycle

VANCLEAVE -- Students at Vancleave High School will join family and other community friends to attend funeral services today for Trent Lloyd Romero.

Visitation is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. when funeral services start at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on Jim Ramsey Road, on the same roadway from where Romero was hit Thursday night while riding his bicycle after leaving the home of a friend.

According to media reports, Romero, 16, was attempting to cross the road when he was hit about 8:30 p.m. by a truck driven by 20-year-old Lacey Schlegel. He was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center, where he died early Friday morning.

Principal Todd Knight said a moment of silence was held Friday at the beginning of the school day and counselors were brought in for students.

"No students have requested any counseling after that day," said Knight this morning.

Counseling still will be provided to individuals who may need help. "If we notice anything we will definitely look into that," he said.

However, Knight said school personnel have found that the best thing for students is to get them back into their studies and school activities. Vancleave High has about 950 students.

Knight said he feels the death of Romero and any other student almost as the loss felt by a father. "It's not totally like a father, but as one responsible for them eight hours a day. It's a great loss."

The teenagers, none of who could swim, had one life jacket between them, according to AOL News. The report said they drowned after venturing into an unfamiliar area that had a 20-foot drop-off along the river bank, according to assistant fire Chief Fred Sanders.

None of their family members could swim and had to watch their children lose their lives on what apparently was an outing for some 20 youngsters.
