Sophia Dies After Fight with Cancer

OCEAN SPRINGS -- Sophia Mohler died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, a year after she began a fight against brain stem cancer.

The 8-year-old was a third grader at St. Alphonsus Catholic School. Her parents are David and Theresa Mohler, owners of the Tato Nut Bakery on Government Street.

They closed their business last year after learning of their daughter's illness and sought chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Houston, Texas.

During her illness, Sophia received a tremendous and continuing outpouring of community support. A benefit walk across the Biloxi Bay Bridge and numerous other fundraisers helped raise money for her medical expenses.

She also received a wig from the Pink Hearts group.

Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs will handle funeral services and interment.
