2 Ackerman Teachers Killed on Bus

CALHOUN COUNTY, Miss. -- Two teachers died Tuesday, Feb. 08, in a three-vehicle crash just west of Calhoun City when an 18-wheeler struck head-on one of two school buses carrying students home after a trip to the University of Mississippi.

Stephen B. Moss and Phyliss Graham were teachers at Ackerman High School in Choctaw County. They had accompanied students to the Oxford campus.

Moss, who had been driving the bus, was a football and golf coach and history instructor. Graham, 53, who lived in Eupora, was a special education instructor.

Apparently, according to transportation officials, the bus driven by Moss was the second one that was struck by a tractor-trailer driven by Gary T. Bailey of Mantachie. Bailey, who also was killed in the head-on collision, had sideswiped the school bus just ahead before hitting the one driven by Moss, who lived in Ackerman. The driver of the first bus, Shane Burton, was injured.

About 17 students initially were thought to be hurt in the collision, none with life-threatening injuries. About 60 students on both buses had made the trip to Ole Miss.
